A Journey Through Time…
Located in St Paul’s Square at the heart of Rabat, Mdina, Malta, Grotto Tavern sits in a town rich with centuries of history. The extraordinary cave, tucked away in the lower quarters of the restaurant, has served as a dining establishment since 1962, though its history stretches much further. During World War II, in 1942, locals carved a shelter leading to the cave as a refuge from the relentless bombings. In 1962, the space was transformed into a pioneering restaurant, bringing live music and a wine bar to Rabat for the first time. Today, Grotto Tavern continues to evolve, offering a Michelin Recommended fine dining experience, allowing guests to savour exquisite cuisine amidst thousands of years of history!

Our Menus
We take pride in offering dishes made with the finest fresh, seasonal ingredients, carefully sourced from dedicated local farmers in Żebbuġ, Naxxar, Rabat, Burmarrad, and Żebbiegħ. Through our close collaboration with these farmers, we ensure that each dish is bursting with flavour, grounded in sustainable practices, and showcases the rich agricultural heritage of our country in every bite.

Exceptional Dining Experience at Grotto Tavern
Had a fantastic experience at Grotto Tavern! We opted for the 7-course tasting menu, and it was absolutely superb. Every dish was carefully crafted and packed with flavor. Our waiter (I unfortunately can’t recall his name) was incredibly attentive, making the evening even more enjoyable. It was a special occasion, and the food truly matched the moment. After dinner, we explored the caves, where we learned some fascinating history—definitely added to the experience. Highly recommend!

Excellent, we highly recommend Grotto Tavern. The service, food, and atmosphere were fantastic. Greg and the team of wait staff were wonderful, the chef came to check in to make sure we were satisfied. I would definitely recommend and visit again!
Away from it all
Fine dining in a very cosy and private space. The Grotto Tavern offers different areas for dining. The cave is the perfect place for winding down, relaxing, and cutting off from technology while being served delicious gourmet food by very polite and helpful staff. An experience not to be missed!
